Student: Ok, the applet was fun, but what about the monster table?

Mentor: We are going to do something to it to make it less boring and not so long. We will color it! I propose we color the facts that we can easily figure out without memorizing them. We can take turns coloring.

Before proceeding, look at the table above. Do you see any facts that you get "for free," without memorization? Highlight them with a marker. You can print a copy of the table from here.  Or you can print a different table we are going to use from here. Try to find some patterns that will let you figure out facts without memorization. Find as many patterns as you can: the more patterns you find, the fewer facts you will have to memorize!

Mentor: First, let me color the upper part of it:

Student: Your color is too dark. I can barely read the facts.

Mentor: This is OK. If you know the part I did not color, you will also know the part I colored, so you do not really need to read it more than once. As far as memorization goes, we throw away the part I colored!

Do you know what the Mentor means?

Student: Oh, good, now there are less facts to memorize.

Mentor: How many?

Student (counting remaining facts from the top row down): 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10=55 It took me a while to compute that!

Mentor: There is a neat trick to it.

Try to find a trick to find the sum 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10. Does you trick work for other sums (e.g., for 1+2+...+20)?
